Offshore fishing can be broken down into two main categories- Trolling and Live Bating. Both have their pros and cons.
Trolling is a method of fishing where one or more fishing lines, baited with lures or bait fish, are drawn through the water behind a moving boat. On the average, anglers troll between 4 and 10 lines depending on how comfortable they are and how many anglers you have on the boat to manage the lines effectively. Baits will range from dead frozen, fresh dead, to artificial. Our top several choices for trolling include the following;
Bucktails- Great for casting into schools of fish busting on top of the water such as Dolphin, Tuna, Bonita, Barracuda to name a few. Also ideal for drift fishing as bucktails come in multiple weights. They can be even more effective when a strip of bait is added to the hook for fish such as Yellowtail Snapper, Cobia, and Grouper. Almost anything will hit a bucktail.
Cedar Plugs- Popular choice for that’s been around for decades. These old school bad boys cause lots of commotion up top enticing all species of pelagic fish.
Ballyhoo- The Rod Room carries premium ballyhoo that won’t wash out after 10 minutes of trolling. Candy for dolphin, kingfish, wahoo, tuna, sailfish and much more.
Spoons- Create the image of shiny distressed fish underwater, a predators dream. Like every other artificial, these vary in size which allows them to swim anywhere from 10 to 50 feet under water. If you decide to add a torpedo weight or some wire line depths can range from 50 to 150ft. Wahoo, Kingfish, and Bonita are the number one predateors for spoons.
Lures- There is just no place to begin here. Lures come in every shape, color, fashion, and form. I suggest you get with one of our experts to find out which ones will suit your needs. Range of fish- EVERYTHING!
